Watson-Guptill Publishers, a division of Random House/Crown Books has acquired The New Face of Jazz. We have an expected publication date of Fall 2010. If you want us to come to your town to promote the book by way of lecture for schools or through signings, or if you’d like to have Ned’s gallery series titled, Woodshed Portraits, featured at a gallery in your town, please, email us through newfaceofjazz@gmail.com. We’re so very excited about this and hope you are too! This is not only good news for us, but for the jazz community at large. Bringing the brightest and best voices of jazz to the attention of the world through a MAJOR publisher is a huge defiance of all odds in not only the publishing industry, but our economical times too.

A lot of people have asked about my process and what I reach for with my particular interview style. Here is a glimpse. The other day, I had the opportunity to speak with Sonny Rollins. As one of the most esteemed musicians of our time, I felt quite honored to take time out with him and was granted a small window into his ideas and philosophies. We did not talk equipment, or specific dates in clubs or tunes, we did not speak of rumors or criticisms of his past performances. I think it’s pointless when he’s been interviewed, and most others in this book too, hundreds of times on those subjects, as I don’t think I would have touched upon anything new or particularly revealing. You can find that information on dozens of websites and magazines throughout the past few decades. Also, I think it is more important to learn life lessons from someone who has endured the ages and changes this music has brought about in his lifetime, and most of which he has played a role in. I believe we need a connection to this music. We need to be able to establish a common ground that was once a large part of the music industry. That can only be achieved by bringing out the humanity in this music. The human experience is something we all have, whether musicians or not, in common.

It’s this, the side of jazz that has been so blatantly stolen by the industry who has made a business out of music, which unfortunately it has to be, that has gone missing from the public eye. I hope to kidnap it from its current place, the inner-side of their thoughts and put it down for you to read and understand and take away a little piece that can bring some light into your life.

If you have specific questions for the artists and want to hear more about them, then please, go to one of their concerts. Go up to them after the show. Jazz Standard in NY has a very small venue. You can sit with the musicians after the show at the bar and speak with them about their lives. Buy them a drink or a dessert (they’ll never turn down food, as I’ve learned) and you’ll find out too that there is much more to their lives and they’re very willing to share it with you more times than not. They work for deflated incomes, whereas the rest of the world watches their incomes gradually go up over the years. A $200 club gig is still, a $200 club gig, whether you’re playing in 1984 or 2009. It hasn’t changed. Maybe even, it’s worse. There are less and less venues to play at and less and less of an audience. Club owners are hesitant to even book new talent if they don’t have a local draw. So getting the experience that players like Sonny Rollins or Dianne Schuur had when they were young is impossible.
I can not express enough how much I need and want for you to support this art, this life that is inherently ours. Don’t let it go to waste, it’s right there in front of you.

Yours,
Cicily Janus
